Many people feel a little confused about what Life Coaching actually is, and therefore this section seeks to clarify this.
First of all, Coaching is not Counselling or Therapy. A Coach does not look to issues in your past and then work with you to overcome them. If you have suffered a trauma in your past and find that it is affecting your life in the present, then working with a Counsellor or Therapist would be the best course of action for you. If your coach feels that this is the kind of help that you require, then they will refer you as appropriate.
Coaches are instead forward facing and will concentrate on working with you to enhance your future. A Coach will help you to gain clarity about your life: what is going on right now, what works, what doesn’t, who you are and what you want. They will help you to see what you need to do to get to where you want to be.
During the coaching process, your coach will offer you support and insight, will challenge you and will make you accountable for your actions. This is done in an emotionally safe and confidential environment, where you are free to explore your thoughts, feelings and actions without fear of judgement.
